Lufthansa Technik chooses Miskolc

Lufthansa Technik has chosen Miskolc as the location of its newest aircraft engine components service centre. Amounting to more than EUR 100 million, this greenfield investment carried out by the affiliate of the largest European airline will create 400 jobs in the seat of Borsod County.

The official German national airline, known as one of the largest European airlines, was established under the name of "Deutsche Luft Hansa AG" in 1926. One of the founding members of Star Alliance, the Lufthansa group operates more than 550 affiliates today, including air passenger carriers Eurowings and Brussels Airlines, freight airline Lufthansa Cargo, and maintenance service provider Lufthansa Technik.

Established in 1994, Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT) is a Hamburg-based MRO (maintenance and repair operations) affiliate managing more than 30 businesses today. The company has been operating in Hungary since 2000. In the past period of almost two decades Lufthansa Technik has implemented investment projects to the tune of some EUR 25 million at the Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest, where it is involved in the supply of maintenance services. In 2016, as a result of its successful operation, LHT introduced higher value-added services in Hungary as well as inaugurated an engineering centre in Budapest.

The freshly announced unit, already the third one, is a repair and overhaul site for engine parts to be set up in Miskolc this time. The 400 new jobs to be created within the frames of the greenfield investment of more than EUR 100 million in the next few years will significantly increase the current workforce of the company.

Aviation industry has seen a major upswing in Hungary recently – in addition to Lufthansa Technik's development efforts, Diehl Aviation also opened a Hungarian engineering centre after the enlargement of its manufacturing capacities in Nyírbátor, while the Swiss-based RUAG Aerostructures has already three manufacturing units in Hungary. Furthermore, Airbus Helicopters is about to join the line by setting up a helicopter components manufacturing plant; the decision on the exact location may be made later this year.
